Back in the day, the internet was hard. There weren’t search engines or pretty HTML5 websites. There weren’t address bars or social networks. You had to dial up other computers and make connections yourself. At least that’s what they tell me.
My earliest internet memories involve AOL, but for those real internet pioneers, this fully functioning Google BBS is a nostalgic trip back to a past that never existed. Based on those Squirrel Monkey videos of alternate-past social networks, this project was whipped up by mass:werk. And it is glorious.
Just pick “Search” or “I’m Feeling Lucky”, enter your query, and listen to the dulcet tones of a yelping modem. It’s not efficient, but it is usable, and it’s a fun little diversion for fogies and young’uns alike. It almost makes me miss Juno. [mass:werk via Boing Boing]
