With most 3D TVs you’ll see a headache-inducing double image unless you’re wearing a pair of polarising or shutter glasses. But researchers from the Shirai Lab at Japan’s Kanagawa Institute of Technology have developed a remarkable screen that can display both 2D and 3D images at the same time, without the eye-straining side effects.
Powered by a pair of projectors working in tandem, the 2x3D display relies on complex image algorithms processed in real-time by a GPU. The system still needs to produce two images for the 3D effect, but using clever colour mixing techniques, one of the images effectively becomes completely white and invisible when you’re not wearing polarised glasses.
The downside to this approach is that the 2D image has only half the contrast of the 3D, and that’s a drop in image quality that home theatre enthusiasts won’t stand for. But the researchers see this technology as being useful for other applications, like signage translated into multiple languages when viewed through special glasses. [DigInfo TV]
