The Only Motion In This Music Video Is From Spinning CDs

Phenakistoscopes are old school machines that used illustrated discs to create animation. Kind of the round version of a flip book. And the Japanese band SOUR wanted those methods in their music video. The whole thing is pretty mesmerising.

The group had Kickstarter and GreenFunding campaigns to raise money for the video, and promised CDs used in the video for anyone who pledged $US70 or more.

Then they sold the rest of the CDs on their website for 3,000 yen (about $US30). The video is called Life is Music (it’s about the circle of life being driven by music etc.) and was directed by Masashi Kawamura and Kota Iguchi. It required 189 CDs. [Spoon & Tamago]
