Traditional photobooths are proven good-time machines. Striking poses for the rapid-fire quartet of pics takes a balance of strategy and spontaneity once you slip your bills in the slot. But what if the machine was set off by something else entirely? Thermobooth is a new model operated by intimacy — the shutter goes off when skin-to-skin contact is made.
Designer Talia Radford and digital media artist Jonas Bohatsch teamed up to create the installation, which is making its official debut during Vienna’s Design Week later this month. Behind a pastel-hued geometric forest of Osram OLED lights, guests step onto a “smart carpet”-covered platform that’s connected to a MaKey MaKey board. Getting touchy-feely triggers a circuit that initiates the flash, and then an adjacent thermal printer produces a fun “quick and dirty” pic of the moment.
