When you’ve grown up with a movie since you were a kid, its characters can seem just as close and familiar to you as your own family. Maybe even more so, since they’re frozen in time. Which is why these early concept images of some of our most iconic cinematic friends are so jarring. That is not the Chewy we’re looking for.

Compiled by Screen Crush, the early art is simlar to what we might picture when we shut our eyes, sure, but something’s just a little… off. Or very off in the case of Yoda, who likes he just accidentally wandered out of the Shire. Still, others like the Silver Surfer stayed fairly true to form, but even when they didn’t change much, the original image manages to give a far clearer look into the artist’s vision.
