That girl you grew up with and haven’t seen in four years does not want to like the Facebook page for the Kickstarter to support your band’s very first regional tour. Neither does anyone who isn’t your mother. So please please please please please please please please1 stop sending out carpet bombed requests that people like your page.
I had 72 pending like requests for pages until yesterday. I just cleaned them all out, with great prejudice. Some were from close friends, one was from a guy I went on a couple of OKCupid dates with two years ago, one was from my mum’s neighbour’s daughter. I’m not really even sure what they were for — a Brooklyn-based upstart production company, a DJ night, a jewellery-making night? One might have been an African orphanage? Who cares! I’m awful. But so are you and so is everyone.
You get so many of these annoying things, it doesn’t even matter. Don’t ask people to like your band or to share your new music video. Anyone who actually wants to is going to anyway, without you begging. Communication is cheapened when it’s carried out solely through Facebook, sure, but it’s especially diminished when it carries so obviously little effort on your part in just blasting all of your friends with a request.
If you really want to promote something, send an email to your closest family and friends asking them nicely. Personal touches go a long way. Facebook is the opposite of personal. But a blanket like request will just get lost in the shuffle, piling up among Candy Crush life requests and the never ending stream of Facebook notifications.
