IFTTT’s New iOS App Mines And Automates Your Entire Phone

If This, Then That (IFTTT) is a pretty clever system for linking data flows between websites — but until now it’s only been available on the web. Now, it’s been made available for iOS, and it looks set to mine and automate your entire phone.

The new app brings plenty of the web-based features to iPhone, allowing users to create “recipes” that use the apps installed on the iOS device. The app offers three new, main channels — Photos, Reminders and Contacts — but you’ll need to be creative to squeeze the most out of things.

So, for instance, you can have your phone automatically upload screenshots to Dropbox, or perhaps have it send a friendly email whenever you add a new contact. And there are plenty of clever little features to take advantage of too: there’s even an IFTTT trigger that activates only for images snapped using the front facing camera, for instance, so you can automatically post all your selfies to Facebook. If, you know, that’s your thing.

The one problem? IFTTT only runs its recipes when the app is active and, since iOS won’t let apps run persistently in the background, that means you’ll need to open the app every time you want it to work its magic. That sucks. Fortunately the same won’t be true on Android — which is cool, because IFTTT is arriving on that platform soon too. [IFTTT via The Verge]
