The Surface Type And Touch Covers Are Getting More Functional

If you looked at the Microsoft Surface Type and Touch Cover keyboards, and you wanted more keys, you’ll be getting them. Well, sort of. Microsoft is updating the keyboard to add the ability to toggle between what the keys on the top row do. It’s a little bit confusing, but if you love your function keys, you’ll definitely know your way around.

The new update, which will arrive in a week for Surface, will let users do more with the keyboard’s top row. For example, screenshots and paging will be easier now. Microsoft detailed the new top row for Surface:

  • Fn+Caps: Locks F1-F12 into being function keys. Do it again and you get the charms, volume, Home, End, etc if you are in the function lock mode, you can get the inverse options by pressing the Fn key, naturally.
  • Fn+: Print Screen.
  • Fn++Alt: Print Screen for the in-focus App only.
  • Fn+Del: Brightness Up
  • Fn+Backspace: Brightness Down
  • Fn+: Home
  • Fn+: End
  • Fn+: Page Up
  • Fn+: Page Down

It still might make more sense to just eliminate the top row of keys to make room for a bigger trackpad, but it seems like Microsoft would much rather enjoy the versatility of function keys.
