The BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera is exactly what it sounds like. It was announced earlier this month and promised to deliver super-sharp image quality in a tiny $1000 device. By the looks of the first bits of footage to hit the web, it won’t underwhelm.
Blackmagic’s chosen camera tester, John Brawley, posted an edit of footage he shot strolling around a farmer’s market. It is clear that the Pocket Cinema Camera retains the sharpness and dynamic range of its big brother, the regular Cinema Camera, making it a great option for filmmakers who need to shoot in small areas or simply want to remain discreet as hell.
What the footage doesn’t show is the low-light performance, which because of the small-ish Super 16 sensor, probably won’t be able to compete with something like a full-frame DSLR. However, because the Pocket Cinema Camera can shoot RAW files, there will be more latitude for reducing noise and recovering detail in low-light settings when post-processing the footage.
