OEM Windows Price Slash Could Make Upcoming Laptops Cheaper

The Wall Street Journal is claiming that Microsoft has started offering discounts to OEMs for Windows 8 and Office 2013, in a bid to drive sales of small, touch-enabled laptops.

The newspaper claims that the deal will see OEMs stumping up just $US30 for a Windows 8 and Office bundle — which is $US90 cheaper than usual. While Microsoft hasn’t confirmed the change in pricing, sources claim the discounts were actually offered up late last month for laptops with touch-enabled screens smaller than 10.8 inches.

Those savings will realistically have an impact on products that are on sale in the fall. What remains to be seen, of course, is how much of the $US90 saving will be passed on to the consumer. [WSJ]
