What Happened On The Internet In 2012 In Numbers

It’s still that part of the new year where you forget it’s actually 2013 and not 2012, so we can still wrap up last year without feeling like it’s too late, right? Anyway. If you were curious as to what happened on the internet in 2012 in numbers, like how many emails were sent or how many people used the internet, you can find that all out here.

Pingdom gathered up all of its research and spit out the massive numbers of Internetting. We highlighted some of them here:

  • 2.2 billion email users worldwide
  • 144 billion — total email traffic per day
  • 68.8% of email is spam
  • 87.8 million — Number of Tumblr blogs.
  • 246 million — Number of domain name registrations across all top-level domains.
  • 2.4 billion — Number of internet users worldwide.
  • 40.5 years — Average age of a Facebook user.
  • 37.3 years — Average age of a Twitter user.
  • 1.2 trillion — Number of searches on Google in 2012.
  • 1 — The top trending question of the year on Ask.com: “Will Rob and Kristen get back together?”

If you want more numbers — and trust, there are a lot more — head over to Pingdom to bury your head in millions, petabytes and the fact that Brazil is the most active country on Facebook. It sort of feels like years just start piling on top of each other and nothing much really changes about the Internet but that’s not true. Compare 2012 to 2011 and you can see how much things can change. What will 2013 bring? [Pingdom]
