Top Windows 8 Touch Apps: Social Networking

Want to make the most of the touch interface on your new Windows 8 tablet, hybrid or desktop? All week we're rounding up the best touch-friendly apps for Windows 8. Today: tools to make social networking even easier.

MetroTwit

Australian-developed MetroTwit brings Twitter fully into the Windows 8 world. Support for multiple Twitter accounts and easily customised views make it a breeze to keep track of your favourites.

Skype

Skype remains one of the most popular VOIP calling apps out there, and owner Microsoft wanted to make sure Windows 8 users didn't miss out on the experience. Full integration with Outlook (and with Windows 8 features such as search) mean this is a solid choice for voice, video and IM. (Indeed, Skype will replace Windows Messenger later this year.)

IM+

If you're an instant messaging addict, you'll wonder how you ever survived without IM+. The app supports numerous IM services, including all the biggies (Google Talk, Facebook, ICQ, Skype, Jabber and many more).

FlipToast

In the absence of an official Facebook app and if the built-in People app isn't quite enough, FlipToast remains one of the best ways to keep up to date on what your friends are doing. As well as Facebook, you can also easily add updates from Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram to the FlipToast live tile.

Social Dribble

It's a Metro-era take on the screensaver. Pick a hashtag and Social Dribble will display tweets that match in big-screen format.
