Nikon’s New Coolpix Cameras: Crazy Zooms And Wi-Fi On A Budget

Nikon has just announced a slew of new Coolpix models — some good, others so-so — but one things is clear: Nikon is trying to pack in the specs at keen prices.

Take, for instance, the new Coolpix P520: it offers an 18-megapixel sensor, 3.2-inch tilting LCD, GPS, Wi-Fi and a frankly insane 42x zoom. Retailing at $US450, it packs a decent set of features for the price. Elsewhere, the S9500 — pictured above — seems like a winning option: 18.1-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, 3-inch OLED display, built-in Wi-Fi, GPS, and a 22x zoom, crammed into a tiny body, all for $US350.

The bargain basement models are on the up, too: the $US180 Coolpix S5200 offers built-in Wi-Fi, along with a 6x zoom and 16-megapixel CMOS sensor. Not too shabby for the price. There are less interesting arrivals, too, in particular a new range of garish and bulbous-looking ruggedised shooters. So, all in, the new models might not be groundbreaking, but those seeking a rich feature set on a budget may perhaps find something here that they like. [Nikon]
