Asus Threatens To Launch Windows Phone 8 Padfone

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Asus is in talks to license Windows Phone 8. Don’t get too excited though, because the Taiwanese manufacturer thinks its doomed Padfone is the ideal vehicle for the OS.

Windows Phone 8 is still a little short of hardware companions, so it seems likely that Microsoft will play ball. If it does, Asus’s VP Benson Lin already has plans:

“With our Padfone concept, the phone plus tablet, I think it makes sense for Windows 8”

But does it really make sense, Benson? I don’t think it does. While the old incarnation of the Padfone ran Android — which can happily play with a range of screen sizes — WinPho 8 is currently tied to smaller screen sizes. Windows tablets run RT, phones run WP8 and currently there’s no flexibility to chop-n-change between the two, which the Padfone requires. So, either Benson knows something we don’t or he’s pulling ideas out of his arse. Which could it be? [Wall Street Journal via Engadget]
