For the most part, torch design steers towards industrial and functional rather than just straight-up eye candy. But designer Gad Scott Tal’s stylish Flashlight No. 1 is just the opposite, embracing beautiful natural materials at the cost of a blinding beam.
That’s not to say the torch isn’t usable; it’s most definitely a fully functioning way to navigate at night. It’s just that instead of machined aluminium or titanium, it’s hand-crafted from timber reclaimed from dismantled homes, complete with leather and brass details. Think of it as a $US85 collectible work of art that would also happen to come in handy the next time the power’s been knocked out in the middle of the night.
