This sort of seems like piling on. Google just added a bunch of new high-res images to its maps. That means its overhead satellite data should be even more up to date, and its 45-degree Flyover-like images will be more abundant.
Fifty one new cities got the update to 45-degree images, which show cities from the angle so you can make out details in landmarks that are impossible to see from straight overhead shots from satellites. The data for 17 major cities and 112 countries or regions was updated, which is routine maintenance. But the two updates are also probably a thumb in the nose to Apple, which issued an apology about how poorly its own mapping system is performing.
Thing is, while this can be seen as a mini-shot taken at Apple, the 45-degree view refresh is also a move to keep up with competitors. Bing’s maps have had Bird’s Eye View for a while now, and for as buggy as Flyover is, it’s similar functionality. So Google’s not just flexing; it’s playing out the arms race, too.
