City Lens AR App Available Now For Nokia Windows Phone Devices

So far we've only had the chance to hear about the capabilities of Nokia's sweet-sounding City Lens augmented reality app. If you've got a Nokia Lumia 900, 800 or 710, you can get a beta version of the app right now.

City Lens works much like Yelp's Monocle: point it at a street corner and your phone's screen will serve up the names of the restaurants and shops in the immediate area. Sounds like something you want to check out, right? Here's how.

If you want to download the app, you can simply search for it in the Windows Phone Marketplace from your Nokia Windows Phone 7 device. You can also use scan this QR code from your Nokia phone to get access to the beta.

Here are SlashGear's instructions on how to download the app:

1. Press the Search button on your Nokia Lumia and then tap Vision 2. Scan the barcode 3. Tap on the link when it appears on the screen 4. Install the application from the Windows Phone Marketplace

Remember, you must have a Nokia device to get the app. It won't work if you search for it from anywhere other than a Nokia Windows Phone device. Give it a shot and let us know what you think of it in the comments below. [SlashGear]

Installing now... to be honest I don't have high hopes given the existing content in WP's Local Scout and Nokia Maps, but I'll give anything a chance ^_^. Also, huge fan of AR generally and Translator works brilliantly.

Please let me know how it goes for you.

It's rubbish, but the fault does not lie with Nokia. The software itself, features, usability and content are all a very pleasant surprise. The thing that rubbishes the whole experience? MS' complete and utter failure to amend WP7's handling of the compass so that it reports the correct direction when the device is in the southern hemisphere.

Tested it near Darling Harbour with known POIs. If not for MS ignoring this issue with WP (which has been raised and known since practically day 1) I would be showing this off to mates and actually using it to discover cool places. As it is, it's a complete waste if you don't live and travel north of the equator.

Nokia, please get MS to fix this. Users have been ignored thus far.

I have the city lens app on my nokia c7 and it works pretty well. the c7 runs symbian so i guess it is a fault with the windows phone apis.

I too can confirm the WP7, Compass and Southern Hemisphere don't play well on my HTC Trophy either :( I am pretty sure MS is aware of the isssue, just haven't fixed it

Downloading now. May have to go into town this arvo to check it out.

Well, I didn't go into town but just pointing it out of the boat gave me results where I didn't even realise there were shops. But when I checked satellite maps I think it is just showing residential addresses that happen to be the addresses of businesses. But it gave me good results when I pointed the phone at Neutral Bay. I still want to check it out on an actual street full of shops.

Version (not showning beta) and works okay, will be better when content is improved.. It has been available for a week.

Just tested it in India. It has exceeded my expectations.Almost everything is tagged.
