We’d Have No Sense Of Self Without Facebook: Agree Or Disagree?

We’d Have No Sense Of Self Without Facebook: Agree Or Disagree?

I was talking with a good friend today about Facebook, introspection and self-image. I’m on Facebook, but my friend has never tried it. He said he doesn’t think about himself or reflect on his life nearly as much as other people (myself included), and he wondered if maybe his disinterest in analysing the minutiae of his life has anything to do with not having a Facebook account.

Think about it: no timeline, no friend lists, no documentation of his every waking moment. Facebook enforces self-reflection; it demands that we keep up and curate this very public, almost packaged version of our life. Last night’s party, today’s good hair day, your graduation. Everything, really.

I’m not quite sure what I think about this yet, but I can’t stop thinking about it. What about you? Do you agree? Disagree?
