Segways Are Now Legal In Canberra

Good news, nerds! Now you can ride your Segway legally in Canberra without falling foul of the fuzz.

The two-wheeled piece of gyroscopic tech is banned around Australia for failing to fall in line between a mobility aid and a motorbike. As a result, riding one can get you fined by the police, who obviously have nothing better to do than to spoil the fun of geeks getting about. The fine is substantial, too. How does $2200 sound?

That’s all a thing of the past around some Canberra attractions now, after the territory’s Attorney-General Simon Corbell lifted the ban over the weekend. You can now use your Segway on Canberra’s bike paths and around Lake Burley Griffin.

Now all Canberra needs is better access to the National Broadband Network and it’ll be a haven for geeks everywhere [ABC via Yahoo!]
