This Crazy 1970s Fisheye Lens Could Be Yours For $160,000

If you have a taste for wild fisheye shots, here’s the ultimate lens. It’s claimed that it can “see behind itself”, was made as a proof-of-concept for a trade show in 1970, and it can be yours. If you have $US160,000 lying around, that is.

Officially called the Fisheye-Nikkor 6mm f/2.8, the lens was unveiled at the Photokina trade show in Cologne, Germany in 1970. It’s seven inches long, has a diameter of 10 inches, and weighs over 5kg. Most crazy of all is the fact that it offers a picture angle of 220 degrees.

Very few of the things were ever made, and they largely ended up being used for extremely technical applications such as architectural shots. The result is a price tag of $US160,000. If you want to own perhaps the most ridiculous lens ever made, it’s on sale through Grays of Westminster in London, UK. [Amateur Photographer]
