Rolex is known for its industrial-strength Submariner dive watches that can take more of a licking than a Timex. But Tudor, Rolex’s baby brother, might steal its thunder with a watch that tightens around a diver’s wrist the deeper they go.
The new Pelagos features an extending clasp — like most professional dive watches — allowing it to be worn over a thick wetsuit. But the deeper you go underwater, the more pressure there is acting against you. Which causes a wet suit, and even your body, to compress. When that happens, a watch that was tight when you first entered the water, won’t be anymore.
So the clasp on the Pelagos features a special mechanism that contracts as you go deeper and deeper, ensuring your watch doesn’t slip off and end up in Davy Jones’ locker.
