Because what better way to explore British East Africa than from the comfort of a custom trailer? It’s how John Madden would have explored the Congo.
The Jungle Yacht, as it was dubbed, belonged to Italian explorer Commander Attilio Gatti, who, with his wife, explored much of the African Congo in the late 1930s. The yacht was composed of a two-trailer assembly — essentially a five-room mobile apartment — measuring 13m in length and weighing eight tonnes. They were built by International Harvester, which was also a sponsor of Gatti’s ninth and 11th expeditions into the wilds between 1937 and 1947.
Large 110V generators sat behind the truck cabs and provided electricity whenever the caravan made camp. The generators powered the expedition’s workshop, photographic lab and ham radio station, as well as a 4500V electric fence erected every evening to dissuade curious wildlife with extreme prejudice.
