Xappr Gun Brings Laser Tag To The Smartphone Generation

When I was a kid, we lived first-person shooters, running around with vests and pistols in a game called Lazer Tag. It’s long gone, but this new Xappr Gun for smartphones looks like it might recreate some of that fun.

On its own it makes playing motion controlled shoot-em-ups and augmented reality titles slightly more realistic, but that’s nothing we haven’t seen before. What will make the $30 Xappr gun unique, when it’s available later this year, is player-to-player combat with an upcoming game called ATK.

As you can see the front of the gun has a glowing indicator that I’m assuming is read by the camera on your opponent’s smartphone, and vise-versa. So you can run around like children of the ’80s, blasting each other with different weapons and bombs. Unlike most appcessories, the Xappr will actually be compatible with iOS, Android and Windows Phone devices, and will be first shown off at the International Toy Fair in Nuremberg this week.
