Is HTC Working On A Spotify Rival?

When HTC ponied up $US300 million for a majority stake in Beats, it’s fair to say it signalled its interest in audio. Now, rumours suggest the handset manufacturer is setting its sights on music streaming.

According to GigaOm, the Taiwanese company, in partnership with Beats co-founder Jimmy Lovine, is planning to square up to Spotify.

The report goes on to suggest that “sources familiar with the company’s plans” say the service would be offered as a default music client on HTC devices. There’s also mention of a “wireless boombox that would most likely stream music from HTC phones over Bluetooth”. Maybe we’ll see an announcement at MWC later this month? [GigaOm]
