5-Minute Koyaanisqatsi Is Like Cultural CliffsNotes

The movie Koyaanisqatsi was revolutionary when it came out in 1982, and 30 years later it’s still an incredible work. But for those who can’t sit through 90 minutes of beautiful slow-mo footage, here it is, sped up 1552 per cent.

The one thing I miss is the eerie and minimalistic Philip Glass score from the original. Would be interesting to hear that sped up 15.5 times, too. Wyatt Hodgson, who created sped up the piece calls it Balance Out of Life and says, “The year 1552 marks the publication of ‘A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies’, an account of the mistreatment of the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas”. Yeeaah, or maybe 1552 per cent just happened to be how much it needed to speed up so it would fit perfectly with the song you picked for it. Call me a cynic. Regardless, it’s still beautiful.
