Garmin’s new GPS golf computer is full of course maps and tracks just about everything related to the game, from scores to club efficiency. Basically, you can go ahead and fire your caddy now.
The $US300 Garmin Approach G6 is loaded up with detailed maps of more than 25,000 gold courses worldwide — and counting (the company will continue to add more with firmware updates) — to let golfers know exactly where they are on a course and how far they are from the pin. (And you can adjust the onscreen flag to match the day’s pin placement.) It shows distance to the hole, as well as to the front and back. And as you’re getting to the pin, the G6 shows layup arcs on the maps, as well as reference yardage distances at 100, 150, 200 and 250 yards.
It also keeps score and tracks performance metrics, like fairways hit, greens in regulation and putts per round. You can track which clubs you’re hitting and how far you’re averaging on each. It will keep score for up to four golfers, with Stroke Play, Stableford, Skins and Match Play, and adjustable handicaps.
In the brief time we looked at G6, it seemed both bright and responsive. The screen was very visible and easy to control. I had no trouble using it even without instructions. It’s also super light and has the same form factor as Garmin’s Edge 800. On second thought, maybe it will make you a better golfer too. Be the ball, Danny.
