Everyone knows being in a band is cool. But what’s cooler is making your own band out of old computer parts and then getting it to play a note-perfect version of The Animals’ House Of The Rising Sun.
This video was posted by YouTuber BD594, and it features a wide range of old computer parts, all upcycled to knock out ’60s classics. It doesn’t use samples or any other audio effects — the whole piece relies entirely on noises generated by the kit you can see in the video.
For those that are interested, BD594 gives a full list of his band members. Seeing as you ask: on the vocals, an HP Scanjet 3P, Adaptec SCSI card and a computer powered by Ubuntu. On keys, an Atari 800XL with an EiCO Oscilloscope. Playing guitar, a Texas instrument Ti-99/4A with a Tektronix Oscilloscope. And finally, pounding out the beat, a hard drive powered by a PiC16F84A microcontroller.
Personally, I think the scanner is inspired and I love the use of a hard drive platter as a drum. But the whole thing is a geeky, nostalgia-inducing five minutes. And it stands up remarkably well as a piece of music, nerdy fun aside.
