Rumour: Sony Considering $US1b Control Of Sony Ericsson Phones

Sony sure had itself a day recently, and rumour has it the tech giant may soon obtain full control over the mobile phone joint venture it has with Ericsson.

This according to a rumour reported by the Wall Street Journal (and industry gaming pub Gamasutra), which reports Sony is close to a $US1 billion takeover of the Sony Ericsson 50/50 joint venture behind devices like the Xperia Play. That device, if you’ll recall, bears the PlayStation brand and was 100 per cent marketed to the masses as a game-playing device that happened to make phone calls.

But where would the acquired Sony Ericsson assets go? Again, according to rumour, the bits and pieces would be folded into Sony’s PC and gaming wing as part of a streamlining manoeuvre to save cash and improve operations.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play owners or otherwise, does this sit well with you? [Gamasutra]
