Big Mother Is Watching: Statue Of Liberty Gets Panoramic Webcams

Soon you’ll be able to see the world from Lady Liberty’s vantage without ever visiting New York. The Statue of Liberty is getting a sweet 125th birthday gift: five webcams that will broadcast sweeping panoramas 24 hours a day.

The webcams will be switched on on Friday during a ceremony commemorating the 125th anniversary of the statue’s dedication. Using the Mother of Exiles’ new eyes, viewers online will be free to stream next-level images of Governors Island, Ellis Island and lower Manhattan. The cams were donated to the National Park Service by EarthCam, an online network of cams all over the world. If the footage is anywhere near as cool as this image provided by EarthCam to the AP, we’re in for a treat. Liberty never looked so good. [EarthCam via AP]
