Rumour: Kindle Fire Is ‘Stopgap’ Before REAL Amazon Tablet

Ryan Block at gdgt has word via his sources that the Amazon Kindle Fire — the device that can truly go toe-to-toe with the iPad — isn’t the tablet they’re putting their faith in. The real new hotness will be the second-gen Fire. And it’s coming soon.

The Kindle Fire, it being essentially a better, badder PlayBook, is supposed to be out by November, just in time for Christmas. Exciting to be sure. BUT Block’s sources say that the new new Kindle will be out by Q1 of next year. It could very well be out by January! And Amazon is said to believe that release, however it may materialise, will be the big one.

Which is insane. And could also be off. After all, why undermine a potentially major release with an even better update months later? Is Amazon that afraid of holiday competition from the Nook Color 2? It makes the Fire seem more than a little half-baked, and our excitement misplaced. [gdgt]
