Could The iPhone 5 Be Smaller Than We Think?

Yesterday, Macitynet showed off some pictures of the iPhone 4 and iPod Touch practically drowning in the now-famous iPhone 5 cases, pointing toward a thinner and wider design revamp. But MacRumors hired a designer to confirm the design. It’s smaller. Significantly so.

Both MacRumors’ designer and the third party iPhone 5 cases used a leaked Apple design document as their lodestar, and the influence shows. Both feature a tapered design and a notably thinner body. However, according to the designer’s renderings, the phone itself ought to be 4.33″ x 2.36″, shorter but slightly wider than the current gen iPhone. When they measured the cases, they found it to be designed for a phone around 4.7″ x 2.6″, with some room for error. These cases are just too big.

What does this all mean? Well, it means there’s nothing certain. Either the cases are wrong, or MacRumor’s trusted designer is wrong. Unless someone somehow shows measurements for that lost iPhone, we won’t know until the iPhone 5 is revealed later this month. [MacRumors]
