Police Arrest Man For Planning Water Fight Via BlackBerry Messenger

You know when the Brits said they were going to investigate the use of social networks to organise crime? They weren’t kidding. They’ve arrested and charged a 20-year-old man for planning a water fight (yes, a water fight) over BBM.

According to The Guardian, the 20-year-old man was arrested by Essex police in the UK under the 2007 Serious Crime Act for ‘encouraging or assisting in the commission of an offence’. Digging into BBM (which is a closed network) to find proof would have required some borderline hack wizardry that I’m but the police said they used ‘appropriate measures for whatever the crime and wherever our investigation lead us’. That crime being water fights, I’m not sure any sort of investigation was appropriate.

It’s an effing water fight, guys. They’re fun. I don’t want to live in a world where planning a water fight is a crime. [The Guardian via Slashdot]
