Oh Look, There’s A Dead Cruise Ship In Google Maps

Sunday April 30, 2000, was not a good day for the World Discoverer, a cruise ship originally built in Germany, in 1974. At 4pm local time, she hit a rock that wasn’t in the Solomon Islands charts.

It wasn’t pretty. But now it kind of is.

The ship is still wrecked against one of the beaches in Roderick Bay. The captain, Oliver Kruess, got her into the bay to ground here while she was listing 20 degrees, to avoid one nasty case of Poseidon. After all, there can’t be a Gene Hackman in every ship.

She still lies there, tanning her belly, for you to discover her in Google Maps

[Thanks Oscar!]
