Do Time Capsule, Airport Shortages Mean WWDC Refreshes Likely?

The word from Apple is that WWDC is going to be a softwarepalooza, no iDevices invited. But what if some of Apple’s hardware is integral to its iCloud strategy? Like, say, Airport Extreme, Airport Express, and Time Capsule?

Reports from MacRumors and TUAW indicate that Apple Stores are seeing their Time Capsule and Airport inventories dwindle precipitously with no refills in sight – one of the best indicators that old hardware is being phased out to make way for new hotness.

The timing’s right, too; Airport Express hasn’t been updated since 2008, and Extreme since 2009. And aside from the clear cloud tie-in, isn’t it about time Airport Extreme supported AirPlay? Pretty please? We’ll find out on Monday either way. But here’s hoping that Apple’s dustier gear is about to get some new shine. [MacRumors]
