Netflix Now The Internet Traffic Emperor Of North America

Netflix continues to consume the entirety of the internet, climbing to the number one spot of an entire continent, with a whopping 30% slice of peak downstream traffic. That’s almost a third! What’s in second place? Oh, you know, “websites.”

Yes, pathetic little HTTP downloads account for a trifling 18% of peak North American internet traffic now. It’s not exactly a fair fight, as streaming (particularly HD streaming) takes up far, far more bandwidth than, say, checking Facebook. But still—Netflix’s traffic maw will only get wider as more people ditch discs, the library expands, and we’re able to lie in bed streaming old episodes of 30 Rock from eight different devices at once.
