If you need any reminder to lock up your home Wi-Fi network with a password, here it is: A man was accused of downloading thousands of images of child pornography. Disgusting and gross, right? Yup. But it wasn’t him! Turns out, it was his neighbour that had tapped into his home’s open Wi-Fi network who downloaded the child porn.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials had barged into the man’s house early one morning because an investigator with the Department of Homeland Security found that the handle ‘Doldrum’ had shared files of videos and images depicting children engaged in sexual acts. The investigator identified the IP of the router ‘Doldrum’ was using and got the ISP to identify the subscriber, the innocent man who left his Wi-Fi open.
After questioning the man and scouring through the man’s desktop, iPad and iPhone, officials realised it wasn’t him but another person used the man’s open Wi-Fi network to engage in these disgusting illegal exchanges. They went back to the logs and discovered it was 25-year-old John Luchetti, a student of SUNY Buffalo living in an apartment next to the man’s home. They arrested Luchetti who has plead not guilty to the charges.
