Japan May Have To Bury Nuclear Reactors In Sand And Concrete

The Fukushima nuclear situation is officially on the same level as 1979’s Three Mile Island situation, having been raised from 4 to 5 on the seven-level international scale.

Dropping water from helicopters didn’t abate the overheating reactors yesterday, so TEPCO has been forced to consider other options – including burying the plant just like Chernobyl.

TEPCO said that “it is not impossible to encase the reactors in concrete. But our priority right now is to try and cool them down first”. A power cable will be attached to two of the reactors, which have been without power for days now, in the hopes the water pumps can start working again and cool the fuel rods down. They’re hopeful power can be restored by Sunday to the No.3 and No.4 reactors, which are the least-damaged of the lot. [Reuters and Kyodo]
