Everyone’s got at least one digital camera these days. But how well do you use it? Welcome to The Gizmodo Shooting Challenge, where Giz readers get to pit their photographic skills against each other for the admiration of their editors on a dedicated theme each week. This week’s challenge? Summer.
You can interpret the theme in any way you see fit. There are only a few rules that must be adhered to:
1. The work must be your own
2. Photos must be taken after the challenge was announced (no portfolio linking or it spoils the “challenge” part)
3. Explain, briefly, the equipment, settings, technique and story behind shot.
4. Email submissions to contests@gizmodo.com.au
5. Include 800px wide image (200KB or less) in email.
6. One submission per person.
7. Use the proper SUBJECT line in your email (more info on that below)
Send your best photo by Monday, February 7 at 8am AEDT to contests@gizmodo.com.au with “Summer” in the subject line. Save your files as JPGs, and use a FirstnameLastnameSummer.jpg naming convention. Include your shooting summary (camera, lens, ISO, etc) in the body of the email along with a story of the shot in a few sentences. And don’t skip this story part because it’s often the most enjoyable part for us all beyond the shot itself!
The photo above was taken last year on Brighton Beach on the Panasonic Lumix launch. I was shooting with a Panasonic FT2 tough camera, f5.4, 1/400 of a second. The girls were models Panasonic had hired to pose for a throng of Asia Pacific journalists, and Ken Duncan. Watching Ken Duncan crawling around in the sand shooting two young models is an image permanently embedded in my brain, and always manages to give me a chuckle.
