Microsoft’s not even shown off Windows 8 yet, but already Intel’s talking about the potential of using the OS’ PC processors in smartphones – and maybe even Windows 8 itself, some people are speculating.
Intel’s CEO Paul Otellini declared his interests during financials call yesterday, claiming that “we have the ability to put our lowest-power Intel processors running Windows 8, or “next-generation Windows”, into phones, because it’s the same OS stack. And I look at that as an upside opportunity for us.”
The thought of super-fast PC processors (even if they are Intel’s “lowest-power” chips) being used in smartphones makes me all jittery with anticipation. But running Windows 8 itself in smartphones, as well as PCs and tablets? Just because they could do it, I very much doubt Microsoft would just kill off Windows Phone 7 – a platform they’ve invested $US500 million into on advertising alone – just like that. Microsoft may’ve made many, many mistakes in the past, but I doubt even they would be capable of such idiocy. [ZDNET via Crave UK]
