Did You Know That Stars Dance Like Bees?

Astronomers Jay Anderson and Roeland van der Marel at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, have made a weird and wonderful discovery using Hubble: Stars appear to move as a bee swarm dancing inside a beehive.

They have measured the stellar movements in Omega Centauri, a massive cluster in the Milky Way packed with 100,000 stars, so close together that only Hubble has been able to tell them apart. Anderson and van der Marel used images captured from 2002 to 2006 and made this simulation of how stars would move over the next 10,000 years. [NASA]
