In a lot of ways, a 3D laptop makes at least as much sense as a 3DTV, especially when that laptop is the first to play 3D Blu-ray discs in the US. That's Toshiba's A665. It's kind of beastly.
We'd already gotten a glimpse of the A665 - called Dynabook in the UK - but we finally know that the 15.6-inch laptop will hit US stores on June 20th. Also confirmed: in addition to that 3D Blu-ray capable drive, you pack in one of Intel's monster Core i7-740QM quad core processors, NVIDIA GeForce GTS 350M discrete graphics, 4GB DDR3 RAM, a 640GB hard drive and a 12-cell battery. The bare bones 3D model - which is still pretty potent - starts at $US1600.
Also entering Toshiba's entertainment laptop cadre: a non-3D A665 and the M645, both of which offer processors ranging from Core i3 up to Core i7 or AMD's Phenom II Quad Core and optional discrete graphics. Unlike the 3D PC, these two models also come with seamless graphics switching Nvidia Optimus technology. For the price - starting at $US800 and $US730, respectively - they should offer a solid level of performance, and will also be available this Sunday.
The new line-up also sports a new look that Toshiba's calling Fusion X2, which combines a textured surface with a glossy trim. While it'll keep your notebook from constant smudging in most places, I'm not sure the two elements fuse together quite as seamlessly as promised.
