The Next Apple TV To Be A $US100 Screenless iPhone?

According to an Engadget source, the next Apple TV will be a totally reimagined device built upon the hardware and software architecture of the next iPhone. And it'll cost $US100.

Rather than relying on local storage - the next Apple TV is rumoured to have just 16GB - Apple will offer network streaming from devices like Time Capsules while moving to cloud-based streaming that works within iPhone OS. With just a power plug and video out, the next Apple TV will stream 1080P movies to your TV. That's right - no Ethernet.

The rumour comes with no explanation on app support, nor does it explain whether or not the next iPod touch will feature all of the same capabilities (frankly, there's no reason it shouldn't). And actually, it does nothing to explain why the next Apple TV will be any more appealing than the current Apple TV. So what if Apple TV will have high def streaming - the current Apple TV does, too, even if the service is a bit more rudimentary. So what if Apple TV is cheaper? Nobody ever wanted it in the first place.

The key to any Apple TV relaunch will need to be, and will be, apps. With apps, Apple TV becomes a game console that undercuts the Wii. And with apps, Apple can advertise their iAds in the living room.

I'm taking bets: How long until the iAd is the new commercial in the TV show you downloaded? How long until we're right back at square one? [Engadget]

if this is true, in the remotes current form, the use of apps would be an utter pain.

They would need hope everyone with an ATV had an iPhone or iPod Touch so the remote app on those devices would make the use of apps engaging. Hmm mind you by using the iPhone OS they would open up the ATV for bluetooth mouse and keyboards... that could work.

I don't think I like the idea of cloud/streaming only. would really prefer the option to at least have a decent amount of memory on board, but guess we'll see.

Interesting ending. I suppose broadcasters set up the 'ad' model originally because it may have been the natural way. It's a brave new world I envisage, where you can be charged for:

    The TV
The tech to run the content (Apple TV)
    The content we're downloading
    The actual download GB
And STILL get unskippable ads, but this time targeted based on your viewing habits (probably to get the next model TV or Apple TV).

Imagine a future where you never stop losing money...

The concept they're selling though could work, assuming that the space on the unit is for buffering and not just storing the OS.

hmm Iphone minus the screen for $100? I suppose this means the next Iphone will be $200 then?

the apple TV is not on a plan.
