Pepsi and Waste Management are teaming up to make every kid’s on-the-go recycling dream come true with Dream Machine, a giant, computerised recycling bin that doles out points for returned bottles. Because who needs deposits when you can have dreams.
The internet-connected kiosks will be installed at places like stadiums, parks and petrol stations and will award recyclers redeemable points for every bottle returned. Presumably, the companies have done some sort of research that projects the increase in recycling offsetting the environmental cost of putting hulking robo-recyclers all over the place. It's not clear exactly what the recycling points will be redeemable for, but "more Pepsi" is probably a pretty safe guess.
Pepsi hopes to increase their bottle return rate from the current 34 per cent to 50 per cent by 2018. Personally, I'm hoping to decrease my Pepsi consumption to 0 per cent by 2012. [Smart Planet]
