Apple iPad Not Charging Via USB For Some Users

Various Twitter users, the team at Consumer Reports and our own Giz editors are reporting problems getting their new iPads to charge via USB. So far, it looks like it will only charge when plugged into a Mac.

Consumer Reports found that PC USB ports, keyboards with USB ports and accessories such as USB hubs don't work. Apple Tech Support told them the device was designed to be charged with the included wall plug. Mark said that he could charge using his iPod wall plug, but that USB charging on his MacBook Pro wasn't working.

UPDATE: An anonymous Apple employee says that the USB ports can't be low power...

"I work for Apple & will give you some insight on the charging issue. The reason the iPad doesn't charge thru most USB ports is due it requiring 10W of power to charge it."

That means back USB ports, usually a certain USB port on most laptops (often the top left-hand side) or external AC USB adaptor. Fun, if not slightly irritating.

I can point my new shiny little toy at the stars & find out the weight of a star 50 million light years away....somebody actually figured out how to do this....RESPECT!!!!! So.... Apple.... Do you think this guy might be able to fix your USB issues?
    Sort it out!!!!

The iPad requires higher power requirements than most USB ports can handle, while the SCREEN IS LIT. Go into Sleep mode, and it will slowly charge. I have tested this. I get the Not Charging indicator while the screen is up, but leave the iPad in sleep mode for a while and the charge does go up.
