Sparks Fly Between Punk Boy And Alien Girl In The New Trailer For Neil Gaiman’s How To Talk To Girls At Parties

Video: Trippy sci-fi love story How to Talk to Girls at Parties — directed by John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) and based on a short story by Neil Gaiman — doesn’t have an Australian release date yet, but this infectiously fun new UK trailer will make you hope it arrives sooner rather than later.

If you didn’t quite get the plot from the trailer, How to Talk to Girls at Parties is about a group of teenagers in the 1970s who stumble into a party populated by alien women (including Elle Fanning and Nicole Kidman). And if you’ve ever been a teenager going to a party with boys and girls, it’s a feeling of excitement and awkwardness you can relate to. Gaiman just makes it literal and pushes things to their weird, wild limits.

Unfortunately, when the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, it received generally negative reviews. But Mitchell and Gaiman are artists whose work I always want to give a fair shot — which is exactly what I’ll be doing when I get a chance to see the film, especially based on this intriguing preview.
