Henry Cavill Agrees That The DC Movies Haven’t Really Worked

In the DC Cinematic Universe, before there was Batman, Wonder Woman, a Suicide Squad or a Justice League, there was Superman. And now even he admits that mistakes have been made with the current slate of DC films.

By Superman, of course, we mean actor Henry Cavill. Cavill played Superman in Man on Steel, Batman v Superman and will also be in November’s Justice League. He’s as big a part of the DC Universe as anyone. And in an interview with The Rake (which isn’t online but we independently verified), Cavill says the following about it:

Even if Marvel didn’t exist, we’d struggle. There was a style they [DC] were going for, an attempt to be different and look at things from a slightly different perspective, which hasn’t necessarily worked. Yes, it has made money but it has not been a critical success; it hasn’t given everyone that sensation which superheroes should give the viewer.

That shouldn’t be controversial, since Cavill is just stating some fairly obvious facts about the difference between how much money they have made versus how well they have been reviewed. It’s always good to know that the people involved in these movies haven’t buried their heads in the sand about the reaction to them. And yet, given the polarising reaction pretty much every film in the current DC movie universe save Wonder Woman has engendered, he might be facing some blow back, despite being entitled to his own opinion.

He then points to the most recent film, Wonder Woman, as a film that gives that sensation.

I think it is a wonderful time for the female hero. It is the perfect setting in social politics right now, we need it, we want that perspective, and Wonder Woman has struck at the ideal time and has become a phenomenal success, which is fantastic. Any success within the superhero universe, especially within the DC Universe, is wonderful, because I want to keep telling the Superman story; selfishly, that works for me.

Cavill then wraps up his thoughts on DC:

I feel like now the right mistakes have been made and they haven’t been pandered [to], and we can start telling the stories in the way they need to be told. It is even better to come back from a mistake or stylistic error into the correct vein because it will make it seem that much stronger. Wonder Woman was the first step in the right direction.

Cavill isn’t the only person in the universe to criticise it. Don’t forget Gal Gadot’s recent comments about Batman v Superman. We’ll see soon enough if Wonder Woman really was the first in of many steps in the right direction when Justice League is released.
