The iPhone Dev Team has a video up showing exactly what their PwnageTool 2.0 looks like. You know, the tool that unlocks iPhone 2.0. Check back in a couple minutes to see the video. This works in both the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G on both 1.1.4 and 2.0 firmware. Woohoo, unlocked iPhones! UPDATE: Video up after the jump.
The new iPhone OS 2.0 software has been unlocked and jailbroken. It was released just hours ago and it has already been cracked by the iPhone Dev Team. The first one took a couple of months, but this one was actually unlocked before Apple released it to the public. And you have had the proof in front of you all morning.
A special thanks to commenter “tamade” for pointing out the obvious. Since AT&T’s unlocked iPhone 3Gs will cost you $599 (8GB) or $699 (16GB), you are better off signing a contract and cancelling it than buying an unlocked iPhone. In fact, it’s even cheaper to buy a 16GB iPhone using this method than to buy and unlock an 8GB version. But math isn’t our strong suit so go ahead and double-check our calculations. We won’t be offended:
Having an unlocked iPhone has always been a tradeoff–you can get some cool 3rd party apps but trying to install firmware updates is a huge pain in the arse. Still, the urge to rebel and personalise your phone the way you want is strong–and there will always be a large group of people who will hack their iPhone just because they can. So, the question is would you unlock a 3G iPhone even when there are good SDK apps to be had?
newVideoPlayer("iphone2_gizmodo.flv", 520, 410,""); Here is our exclusive video of the iPhone with hacked 2.0 firmware, running on a T-Mobile network instead of AT&T. Despite what other reports have erroneously stated, this is not a jailbroken iPhone with firmware 2.0, but a completely hacked version of the firmware that allows you to run any app and use any compatible carrier you want in the world. As we explained yesterday, it’s going to be very difficult for Apple to close this hole, almost impossible, according to iPhone Dev Team sources. galleryPost('iphone2pwnage', 5, '');
Update: Video of project Pwonage after the jump. The beta 2.0 firmware that comes with the iPhone SDK has been modified to unlock the iPhone and run any application. Part of the Pwnage Project, the hacked firmware will allow you to do anything you want, including the installation of both official and unofficial apps, and even patches. We got the exclusive details directly from the DevTeam, including the fact that it is going to be extremely hard for Cupertino to close this new hole:
Basically, ijailbreak 0.5.1 is a Mac version of the ZiPhone utility posted earlier today. As with the Windows version, it is untested so use at your own risk. Hit the link to download. [ijailbreak]
Here’s another unlocking iPhone 1.1.3 solution, this time in application form: according to its author, ZiPhone unlocks any version of the iPhone. You can download it now for Windows but we haven’t tried it yet so, like always, proceed with extreme caution. [Zibri's Blog]
This new device from Brando claims to have the ability to unlock your iPhone on the SIM level by attaching to the card. It will work with any firmware, but keep in mind that activation is required. So, v1.1.2 is a go, but not v1.1.3 (just yet). Plus, it is a good deal at only US$30. Additional pic after the break.
The iPhone 1.1.3 Jailbreak is here, courtesy of Nate True and the iPhone Dev team. It’s a Windows-only download right now, but Nate tells us that they’ve got a Mac version coming soon and it “should be quick”.
