The good news: HTC today launched the Touch HD smartphone. It’s a Telstra exclusive and hits store shelves on February 10.
The bad news: It’ll cost you $1,499 up front or $62.45 a month over 24 months on a $150 Telstra contract. Oh, and it still uses Windows Mobile. More »
HTC is among the leakier phone shops, and someone on the PPCGeeks forums claims to have their full 2009 smartphone roadmap. What’s there? More Android goodness, and a potential US-bound Touch HD-based phone.
HTC is not releasing the Touch HD in the United States. Which still seems a little crazy to me, because few other phones have received such a favourable and envious reaction online recently. Despite the fact that you probably won’t ever want to import one (no US 3G pretty much seals the deal), the Touch HD is still a useful indicator of where HTC, one of the biggest mobile players there is, is going. Now that the phone is available in the UK and Europe, the reviews are starting to hit, and while pretty much everyone continues to be wowed by the hardware, there’s that pesky little Windows Mobile thing that keeps coming up.
These images of a new HTC handset from Nedge2k reveal a surprising addition to the Taiwanese company’s line: a half Touch HD, half Touch Diamond handset for which WiMax — of all things — is the most salient feature. No amount of oohing, aahing or drooling can convince HTC to bring this 480×800 monster to American shores, according to the Taiwanese company. That’s a shame, because it was looking pretty good. The company passed the news on through Twitter, which is the corporate equivalent of breaking up with your girlfriend with a text message: Sad news, US. we looked into it- by the time we could bring Touch HD to the States, it would be old news. We do have other cool stuff coming.
The G1 is admittedly more exciting, but this thing is set to be one of the best Windows Mobile phones available. Import options will be available sans 3G support, which nobody will want anyway.
Frustrating is the wait here in the States for HTC’s Touch HD–especially when our European friends are swimming in them. German site Area Mobile is the latest to post their impressions, and unsurprisingly, they’re pretty positive. I only wish iPhone-killer had a cooler German translation.
HTC has let loose this official video showing off the HTC Touch HD–and although it’s more of a too-brief commercial than an actual walkthrough, it gives a quick look at browsing, maps and images on that glorious 3.8-inch 480×800 screen. French Gadget Site GeekInc, got an early HTC Touch HD unit to play with, and took a bunch of pics to show for it, including a couple of size comparisons against the iPhone. As you can see, they’re pretty much the same size, save for some backend tapering. Their own impressions more or less coincide with our own hands-on, in that TouchFlo was super smooth, the screen was huge, and it appears the Touch HD camera handles low light pretty well.
