With the news that Telstra’s about to start selling the iPad 2, this was pretty inevitable; Telstra’s formally killed off the T-Touch Tab.
Gus over at Lifehacker is carefully watching the rapidly dropping price points of last year’s Android tablets, and has discovered that Shopping Monster is selling Telstra’s resistive-touchscreen device for $129 plus shipping.
It seems the battle for tablet mindshare isn’t going to be played out between Apple and the Galaxy Tab – it’s going to be between the low-end, lowly specced options from the telcos. Responding to Telstra’s T-Touch Tab yesterday, Optus announced the Optus MyTab, a $279 Android tablet with resistive touchscreen from manufacturer ZTE.
Straight off the bat – this is probably not a tablet designed for Gizmodo readers. To hit the $299 price point, Telstra needed to make some sacrifices, and the resistive touchsreen is probably too big a sacrifice for any discerning gadget lover.
It probably comes as no surprise that Telstra are launching their own Android-powered tablet. And while details are still vague, an expression of interest page on the Telstra website has confirmed that the touchscreen device will be a seven-inch model running an as-yet-unconfirmed version of Android.
