But if you do belong to that rare breed of gadget fan who enjoys all types of sports, you may be interested to hear that BigPond has launched a 24/7 sport TV channel for both NextG customers and online. You won’t necessarily get full matches though, with the channel offering news, results and highlights, from a selection of sports including cricket (yawn), tennis, golf, A-League, English Premiere League football, ESPN programming plus other results from around the globe. The service, called BigPond Sport Summer, will set you back $9.95 a month or $3.95 a day for NextG customers, or can be viewed for free online at bigpondsport.com (so long as you use a Windows-based PC, that is). Sadly, there won’t be any real geeky sports, like robot wars or chess tournaments, but who knows what the future holds, right?

In the soccer world (or “football,” to freedom-hating ale swillers), you do not want to be a referee who makes a questionable call. I mean, soccer fans are animals. Europeans seem to just accept the fact that after a match a roving pack of belligerent, mulleted steakheads will roam the streets of their towns looking for people to injure to make up for the team that they like not winning. Imagine what they’d do to you if they thought you made the wrong call! Luckily, there’s a fancy new soccer ball that’ll take some of the pressure off of refs. It’s loaded up with sensors, and when it passes across the goal line, an encrypted signal is sent to a special watch that the referee is wearing letting him know that the goal is indeed legitimate. Apparently the tech inside isn’t so sensitive that it can’t be kicked all over the place, and you’ve got to assume that intercepting the signal wouldn’t really be worthwhile, as even if the refs watch goes off when the ball is at mid-field he probably won’t call it a goal. And really, this should cut down on violence aimed at refs. After all, beating up a fancy soccer ball can’t be nearly as satisfying.
LEDs are becoming pretty commonplace in clothes these days, but Willy Bogner has come up with an idea that is actually useful rather than decorative. He has come up with solar-powered ski suits with LED trim on them to keep you visible on the slopes. The thin film technology lights were designed by Osram, and Bogner unveiled them at an event in Munich last month.
Winter is coming and it’s just about time to hit the slopes, but are you having trouble deciding between downhill skiing and snowboarding? The Venom Switchboard is a cross between the two, and adds an aluminium steering bar for even greater control. This vehicle looks like it mixes together just the right amount of danger and thrills, and it’s not all that expensive, either.

The Switchboard consists of two boards joined together, and when you move the attached bar along with your front foot, it turns the articulated front board, giving you lots of control. You might not want to try this one on icy slopes, but screaming down a hill of packed snow, powder or loose granular ice might be the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

Imported from the Netherlands, Switchboard is now available in the United States for $590. But this Ping-Pong door is enough to change our minds. Housing a Ping-Pong table within an internal frame, the door…unfolds…for a quick match. It’s a clever, efficient use of space for those who don’t require a full-size table to get their Forrest Gump on. Oh—just a minor caveat. One side of the door has to be bright green. We suggest not telling your duplex neighbour before installation. The doortable is set to go on sale next year. And we’ll be the first to let you know after we preorder.
